Everyone has either had it happen to them or known someone it has happened to. A miss-click, visited the wrong website, or bad judgement in opening an attachment thought to be from their boss, and now their computer has malware. It is never a fun time when this happens, and the cleanup can be costly in money and time/productivity.

In the case of that malware being ransomware, which is malware that encrypts computer files and holds them hostage asking to pay a ransom to decrypt the files, the threat is even more expensive.

For the above reasons and many more, we are always evaluating new technologies to better protect and increase our customers’ productivity. One such technology we are making available to our customers is a new antivirus called “Endpoint Detection and Response” or “EDR” for short, which is powered by SentinelOne. Unlike a traditional antivirus program which runs scheduled scans and finds malware based on static definitions/hashes from the manufacturer of the antivirus, this new antivirus uses an AI engine to look for suspicious behavior of programs. The program guards against known malware threats using definitions from thousands of security companies and doesn’t need to regularly scan computer files to do it.

Not having to regularly scan computer files can be a big boost in productivity by itself as scans tend to take quite a few resources from the computer and can cause a loss of productivity. Instead of regular scans, EDR does one initial scan of a computer system when it is installed. After that, it is only looking at current and new files as they are accessed/run. This combined with the AI engine has proven to be a great way to fully protect the computer system while also not getting in the way of the customer’s productivity.

However, the best feature by far of EDR is its ability to roll back changes done by malware. This means that threats like ransomware can potentially be reverted as if they never happened.

In addition to this amazing feature there are many more that EDR has to offer:

ROLLBACK FEATURE DEMONSTRATION
  • Roll back harmful malware changes
  • No recurring scans needed
  • Detects suspicious behavior that otherwise might go unnoticed
  • Protect against multiple types of malware
  • Streamline threat containment and automate responses
  • Timeline keeping of when the threat started and what it affected
  • Allow/Block USB devices on computers
  • Remote control over firewalls and firewall rules on computers
  • Ability to isolate a computer if a malware or threat is found

While the traditional antivirus still has a place in security and will most likely continue to be an option for years to come, we are highly recommending new and current customers get a better antivirus like EDR. The cost is often minimal for the peace of mind it provides. Especially considering recent world news and the likelihood of cyber-attacks becoming more of a possibility in the near future.
